Cambridge Systematics (CS) is pleased to announce that the Massachusetts Traffic Records Analysis Center (MassTRAC) project team – Galina Dymkova, Liam Hon, Kevin Howard, Tazeen Mahtab, and Rebecca Swanson – has received the Cambridge Systematics’ 2010 Marvin L. Manheim Award. This award is presented annually to recognize innovative and creative employee contributions to CS and the transportation industry.
Developed for the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security, Highway Safety Division (EOPSS/HSD), MassTRAC provides public safety officials with web-based access to a rich and growing data warehouse of crash records, citation, and other safety data. The portal enables transportation safety professionals across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to examine and analyze the data in support of statewide safety plans and programs. Users can produce maps, charts, tabulations and cross-tabulations, and formatted reports, and generate meaningful statistics and analyses that support and enhance highway safety programs and policies.
According to Sheila Burgess, HSD Director, “In the past, the lack of access to data hampered the abilities of EOPSS/HSD and other agencies such as the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, the Department of Public Health, and communities to conduct detailed analysis needed for identifying and addressing statewide and community-specific traffic safety issues. This tool allows us and other stakeholders to more effectively identify problem locations and target human and financial resources to the areas of greatest need.”
The MassTRAC data warehouse holds more than 10 million records and was designed to provide very fast data extraction, reporting, GIS, and visualization capabilities. MassTRAC greatly simplifies the process of reporting on highway safety to Federal agencies. “MassTRAC makes it much easier for EOPSS/HSD to report on progress to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA),” said Burgess. “We have received nothing but positive feedback from NHTSA and other users of the application.”
