Transportation Safety
Cambridge Systematics, Inc. is dedicated to using our experience and skills as a nationally recognized transportation services and products firm to help our clients make transportation investments that reduce the human and economic consequences of traffic crashes.
Safety Planning, Implementation, Evaluation, and Training
- Strategic Highway Safety Plans (SHSP) – Cambridge Systematics offers a comprehensive suite of support services for the multiple tasks involved in developing, implementing, evaluating, and updating SHSPs. Our experience includes identifying and recruiting the appropriate stakeholders, as well as sustaining their involvement over the long-term. We also specialize in problem identification through data analysis, surveys, and interviews; creating goals, objectives, and performance measures; identifying and developing strategic countermeasures; facilitating the development of action planning tools; and tracking, reporting, and evaluating outcomes. Cambridge Systematics also creates effective products that turn research into useful information and highway safety bystanders into active participants.
- Statewide Traffic Safety Information Strategic Improvement Plans – We successfully bring together multiple agencies to develop and implement Statewide Traffic Safety Information Strategic Improvement Plans. We assist our clients and state Traffic Records Coordinating Committees with traffic records assessments, Section 408 grant applications, and the planning, development, and identification of clearly defined benchmarks and performance measures for monitoring progress towards a state’s traffic records goals.
- Highway Safety Plans (HSP) and Annual Reports – Cambridge Systematics supports state highway safety offices with data analysis, safety needs assessments, stakeholder outreach and facilitation; strategic resource allocation; performance measurement; Federal guidelines interpretation; and superior document design. We share our knowledge of national best practices in safety planning to help our clients develop effective HSPs, conduct programmatic evaluations, and assist with the production of Federally required Annual Reports.
- Stakeholder Outreach and Focus Groups – Cambridge Systematics organizes, facilitates, and documents stakeholder focus groups, as well as media and outreach sessions. We have coordinated more than two dozen Federal and state forums designed to start a dialogue among safety professionals, transportation planners, engineers, and a host of other stakeholders.
- Commercial Vehicle Safety Programs – We support the planning and design of commercial vehicle safety programs at the Federal and state levels, including facilitating discussion among state and industry stakeholders, supporting the development of mission and goal statements, and developing project descriptions, schedules, and budgets. Cambridge Systematics works with its clients to integrate all of their commercial vehicle safety projects into comprehensive statewide programs that maximize each project’s effectiveness.
- Road Safety Workforce Development – Cambridge Systematics is leading a team of experts in developing “Road Safety 101,” a curriculum designed to address the fundamentals and core competencies desirable for all safety professionals.
- Transportation Safety Planning Working Group – We conduct research, develop products, provide meeting support, and assist with other priority activities for the Working Group, a national broad-based coalition of Federal agencies and professional member organizations.
Safety Systems and Decision-Support Tools
- OnTrackcs™ – Cambridge Systematics developed this web-based application that enables state safety agencies to collect, assemble, update, and share information on projects and performance measures. The system facilitates and simplifies progress tracking and reporting on initiatives included in SHSPs and other programs.
- Traffic Records Portal – We design and develop web-based traffic records portals that make crash records, citations, commercial vehicle, and other safety data readily available, accessible, and easily understandable to members of the transportation safety community.
- Commercial Vehicle Information Systems and Networks (CVISN) – Cambridge Systematics deploys and maintains a suite of information systems that streamlines and automates the sharing of commercial vehicle safety and credential data among Federal, state, and local agencies.
- Safety-Related Data Structures – We supplied information systems expertise for the Model Minimum Uniform Crash Criteria (MMUCC); the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS); the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Safety and Fitness Electronic Records (SAFER) repository; and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Safety Analyst.
- ePortfolio – Cambridge Systematics developed a project prioritization tool for the FMCSA to evaluate research projects based on their potential safety impact, feasibility, and cost. ePortfolio also links proposed projects to the agency’s mission and strategic plans.
- ITS Deployment Analysis System (IDAS) – We developed a sketch-planning tool that estimates the impacts, benefits, and costs resulting from ITS deployment.
