IIMS
Interchange Analysis System

For the South Carolina Department of Transportation (DOT), Cambridge Systematics designed, developed, and implemented an Interactive Interchange Management System (IIMS) for the management, evaluation, and prioritization of the State's highway interchanges.

IIMS provides the South Carolina DOT with a tool to identify interchanges most in need of improvement and to evaluate the potential impact and cost-effectiveness of interchange improvement projects. IIMS works in conjunction with existing tools and systems, including Pontis®, the Roadway Information Management System (RIMS), and the agencywide GIS, providing additional information storage, retrieval, reporting, and analytic capabilities required to achieve the project objectives, but unavailable through existing systems.

Features

• A database of information on more than 200 South Carolina interchanges
• An analytical capability that predicts the likely performance of each interchange over a multi-year period along each of several dimensions, i.e., travel time, congestion, and safety
• A ranking function that sorts interchanges based on different priorities and combinations of these dimensions
• An interactive component that allows users to compose project alternatives for modifying each interchange and to see in real time the effect that each project would have on the ranking for that interchange
