Rural Road Safety Planning

A significant number of crashes occur on rural/local roads where it is often difficult to isolate high-crash locations. Often the lanes on these roads are narrow, shoulders are absent, the clear zone is nonexistent, pavement markings and signage are worn and/or obsolete, and to compound all this, resources for fixing them are limited or not available. We understand the technical, financial and human resource challenges confronting the local and rural safety communities.

June 2014

More than 30,000 people are killed in crashes every year on the U.S. road system.

Safety Planning, Analysis, Engineering and Implementation

We are leaders in Transportation Safety Planning (TSP), a proactive approach that integrates safety considerations into the transportation planning process at all levels, and we pioneered the concept of “conscious planning” in transportation. Our work led to changes in federal law to mandate safety as a separate planning factor and core funding program. We are experts in quantitative safety planning and engineering, providing quantitative estimates of crash frequency to help agencies plan and prioritize investments.
